Kitchen Foundations & a No-Heat First Win
Before any heat, learn the kitchen. Safety, the claw grip, and a recipe your kid can finish with pride on day one. This week builds the foundation every cooking session builds on: clean station, safe hands, mise en place.
Eggs, Three Ways
The egg is the cook's first teacher. Scrambled, fried, and boiled — three methods, one ingredient, and a front-row seat to what heat does to protein. Raw egg white is clear and runny; heat denatures the proteins, unraveling and re-linking them into something firm, white, and solid — a change you can watch happen in real time.
Toast, Butter & the Browning Reaction
Toast looks too simple to teach — until you ask why bread turns golden and tastes completely different from the soft slice it started as. The Maillard reaction is a genuine chemical change that creates new substances that were not there before. This week makes that visible.
Oatmeal & Overnight Oats
Oats teach the single most useful idea in cooking: the ratio. Get the water-to-grain ratio right and you can make oatmeal forever without a recipe. Starch gelatinization — starch absorbing water and thickening — is the science that makes oatmeal go from loose to creamy.
